Peregrine Falcon Closures 2024
Peregrine falcons, an endangered species in New York State, nest on cliffs in the Adirondacks. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation annually monitors cliffs with known peregrine falcon nesting sites throughout the Adirondack Park. Rock climbing routes with active nest sites are temporarily closed to prevent any disturbances that might interfere with the successful raising of the young peregrine falcons. DEC’s priority is protecting an endangered species; however, attempts are made to maximize the opportunities for climbing at the same time.
It’s important to remember that not all active peregrine nests are monitored and not all the affected cliff areas are closed. In the past there have been unmonitored active nests on Wallface, Broughton Ledge and Midway Cliff at Silver Lake. The peregrines will let you know if you’re in their space! If you find yourself in this situation it’s best to give the peregrines their space and report what you saw to Royce Van Evera (Northern Cliffs) vanevera.royce@gmail.com and Doc Livingston (Southern Cliffs) relivingston.jr@gmail.com
The following rock-climbing restrictions will take effect Monday, April 1st, 2024:
